What is a Facelift (Rhytidectomy)?

Rhytidectomy, commonly referred to as a facelift, is a surgical procedure that can help reverse signs of aging such as lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. This is achieved by tightening the loose skin around the cheeks, jaw, and neck area which may help restore a more youthful appearance.

As we age, the tissue and skin around the cells may lose their original shape causing the face to appear older. Adjusting the loose skin to its more youthful position essentially lifts the face and helps smooth out any lines or wrinkles.

What to Expect from a Facelift

Before beginning a facelift, patients will be administered anesthesia and put comfortably to sleep. On average, a facelift procedure will take between two and four hours.

Patients should have an adult ready to drive them home to begin recovery as this is an outpatient procedure. Most people will begin to feel comfortable about a week after surgery, but strenuous activities should be avoided for three to four weeks. Bruising may last two to three weeks, while any scars may take from a few months to a year to fade. Patients must limit sun exposure during the recovery phase.

The longevity of results will depend on many factors such as the amount of excess fat and laxity of the skin. Younger patients should expect to enjoy longer lasting results, while patients in their forties may enjoy results lasting up to ten years. Patients in their sixties may enjoy results for five to seven years.

Please remember that these are general guidelines and some people may need less or more time for a full recovery. You should work directly with the plastic surgeon who completed your procedure for specific instructions.
